Volunteering & Coaching

Make a real impact on the lives of youth in your community.

Our hockey association belongs to the women, men and children of our community.

Without the countless hours of dedication provided by almost 300 convenors, coaches and administrators, there would be no hockey programming.

While we speak most often about the players making lifelong friends, it is no different for the adults who get involved. Volunteering puts you in the heart of the hockey action and of your community. It’s your opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of our youth.

Most of our volunteer positions require little or no experience in hockey. All you need is a desire to contribute and to learn and we will take care of the rest. Whether you’re a hockey player, a people person, a marketing whiz, a number cruncher or anyone who enjoys giving back, we need people like you.

FAQs

Need more information? Check out these questions and answers to help fill in the blanks.

Why should I get involved?
  • Without volunteers, there are no hockey programs! Investing some time in your hockey club is an investment in your community.
  • It’s a great way to be more directly involved with your child’s hockey experience.
  • You can learn new skills and meet new people in your neighbourhood.
  • All volunteers receive an NT-branded baseball cap or other similar apparel.
Do I have to be a hockey player to volunteer?
  • No! With the exception of competitive Coaches, hockey experience is not a prerequisite. Most volunteer jobs involve the tasks you would find in any regular business – planning, coordinating, managing and problem-solving.
Do I have to be a parent or have a child registered at North Toronto to volunteer?
  • No! Non-parent or “retired” volunteers are encouraged to contact us for available positions.
What volunteer positions are available on competitive teams?
  • Head Coach: Leads the organization and development of players and other team staff. Hockey experience required.
  • Assistant Coaches: Teams may have 1 -3 assistants who help to run on-ice practices and attend on the bench during games. Some hockey experience is required.
  • Trainer: Each team is required to have at least one certified trainer (on-line course or people with professional medical equivalent such as physicians, nurses or first-responders.) No hockey experience required.
  • Manager: Each team is required to have a business manager to coordinate budgets, schedules, apparel, tournaments, etc. No hockey experience required.
What certifications do I need?
  • All volunteers/coaches are required to pass a Vulnerable Sector Screening or “police check.” There is no cost to volunteers but this must be done through the NTHA even if you may have already completed one for work or elsewhere.
  • Any volunteers/coaches working with players are required to complete the Respect in Sport Activity Leader online course (This is different form the Parent-only version of the RIS course).
  • Depending on competitive level, coaches and other team staff members may be required to complete additional certifications or training.
Do Coaches get paid?
  • No. We believe that our players are best served by volunteer coaches who have a passion for youth sports and who are dedicated to making a difference in our community.
